Join Hagerty Drivers Club: This Porsche 911 restomod by Workshop 5001 could easily be overlooked. That’s half the appeal. But it would also be a crying shame, because it is brilliant. A 964 RS ‘plus’ that is fabulous from its flawless Grigio Scuro (yes, a Ferrari colour) paint to its magnificent 380bhp 3.9-litre engine sitting below a neat, carbonfibre ducktail.

Based in LA, Workshop 5001 is a small but deeply impressive place run by Marlon Goldberg. His first love is engine building and he has built dozens of flat sixes in varying capacities for all sorts of Porsches. However, he has also done a few special projects. Complete cars taken right back to the start and built up better than new. Each one has been different and this remains true with this, build number 11.

It mixes original and modern with sublime subtlety to create something that still clearly identifies as a 964 but with the performance turned up quite a few notches. The engine has significantly more power than the wildest 3.8 RS and the suspension gets the latest motorsport setup from KW. Inside is a mix of Alcantara and leather with beautiful details, so although this full build, complete with air-conditioning weighs just 2663lbs it doesn’t feel totally stripped out.

As you can see and hear from the film, it is a gorgeous car that still manages to stand out amongst a plethora of Porsche restomods from the likes of Singer Vehicle Design, Guntherwerks and Tuthill. The price? That hasn’t even been disclosed, but as with most restomods it’s safe to say that this is another one to add to the lottery-win fantasy garage for that majority of us!

We hope you enjoy the film. If you’d like to help support the channel, then please think about becoming a member of the Hagerty Drivers Club. If that’s not an option, then a simple like or share would also be hugely appreciated.

  1. Soon as I see any of these restomod Porsches, Tuthill’s creation jumps to mind! And like others have said on here, all after watching Harris rag the little lightweight up n down its 11k rev range. The only other that comes close, was a young fella from Cali that works at Rod Emory’s- kids name escapes me? But what a gun on bodywork and that old art of shaping metal! What he’s done to a gorgeous little 912 might be on par with Tuthill’s..
Search up one of Magnus Walkers recent outlaw episodes and look for a little silver 912 restomod- this one has the proper boxer four, only it revs to 10k! So has that same almost banshee like wail as Tuthill’s. The space between the doors and the rear wheels have been extended just enough to give it 911 proportions and an utterly bang on stance. This kid has also subtly combined elements of a 365- more so to the rear grill and lights- so so tastefully done too. Ultimately, it’s the super lightweight(circa 850kg) and stratospheric rev characteristics in a 911/12 body that is some how irresistible to me. That and the subtle aesthetic- especially in comparison to say a Singer.

I think with regards to this Studio 5001 variant, I’d change the seats too. I’ve never been a fan of those Porsche wheels that stick out further than the tires. Last off, I’d want the weight down to no higher than 1000kg. All hypothetical lottery winning stuff of course;))
