Front-wheel drive comes standard, while all-wheel-drive models incorporate a high-output permanent magnet electric motor on the rear axle, boosting the total powertrain output to 196 horsepower. Accelerating from 0 to 60 mph, which previously took an exhausting 10.5 seconds in last year’s Prius, now takes just 7.1 seconds, according to tests of a front-drive Limited model. This acceleration surpasses both the Camry Hybrid and Elantra Hybrid. With larger front and rear brakes, the new Prius also boasts improved stopping distances from 70 mph, reducing it to just 171 feet compared to the previous 194 feet.

The EPA estimates the Prius achieves 57 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway for front-wheel-drive models, marking a 4- and 6-mpg improvement, respectively, over the previous generation. The all-wheel-drive LE variant sees the most significant fuel-economy boost, increasing from 49 to 54 mpg combined compared to the prior model.
