Six signs of a true black-tie master!

1. Your tux is not a rental; the poor fit and finish of rented tuxedos ruin the elegance of black tie. Buying your own is worth the investment!

2. You’re wearing the proper shirt; standard dress shirts are for suits and sport coats. A proper Black-tie shirt features holes for shirt studs and French cuffs for cuff links–bonus points if yours match!

3. You’re wearing the proper tie; black neckties are for funerals, not tuxedos. With very few exceptions, you should be wearing a black bow tie–but there are still options here, like the ones we sell at Fort Belvedere!

4. You’ve incorporated some color; your tie should be black, but a colorful pocket square, boutonniere, or pair of socks is a great way to inject some lively personality.

5. You’re wearing a waist covering; a waistcoat or cummerbund will help your frame to look more masculine, and it’s another great way to add some color. Don’t leave your waistline bare unless…

6. Your jacket is double-breasted; in a sea of single-breasted tuxedo jackets, a well-fitted double-breasted jacket is sure to get you some compliments and admirers.

  1. This is one thing I refuse to skimp on. I’ve never needed a tux. But when I do, it will be made for me. I’d like to say the same for white tie, but the chances of me ever needing that are a tiny fraction of the chances of needing black tie, and those are already slim. And the tails I want are 10k lol.

  2. I do have one question. Which is more formal, a single breasted tuxedo or a double breasted tuxedo? I always see single breasted tuxedos but I just equate that to people getting the simplest and most common type of tuxedo. Is a double breasted overdoing it at a black tie event? I have some and never used them but want to make sure I am using them appropriately.

  3. So many people nowadays are wearing plastic dinner jackets with horrible printed patterns for their weddings.
I love scrolling through the local marketplace and seeing a lot of these for sale, with wedding photos included. Always the hopelessly too small nylon looking jacket, black pants and cheap patent leather shoes. Of course they paid 2000€ for the "suit".
I call them modern pessants. Give them a 2000€ price tag and some bold colored matte finish and they'll be amazed. Could have gone to Zara and put together a combination for 40€ and it would have looked and fit infinitely better.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
