Another experiment with Patterned Plywood. This time I’m experimenting with patterned plywood edge-grain? This is a very DIY friendly technique that looks more complicated that it is…

Is there a ratio of the size of the plywood with which you start and how much patterned plywood with which you end up?
nice work
"sweet baby Jesus"……… It's going to be SUPER expensive but I think I finally figured out how I want to do the veneers on the top deck of the 10-foot mahogany runabout boat that I'm building. I'll have to make my own "plywood" by re-sign contrasting woods. Probably mahogany and white oak. Then I'll do something like this to make "planks".
VERRRRRRRY niiiice
it does look cool however it seems like a lot to go through just for some edge covers plus adding a veneer seems like it would make this a bit more expensive then just using a lower priced hardwood instead of plywood s look pretty cool but a lot of prep work and my be more expensive just just using a basic veneer
Hey Michael.. The 1st time I saw this was a video u made where u made these lights with Pattern Plywood. I was stunned by the idea. It's brilliant. I guess the plywood has to be a very good grade? BB is it? Baltic Birch is very hard to get even in Europe now.
Anyways u made these beautiful light where u used a grinder with the shaper wheel on it to grind a kind of TEAR DROP SHAPE and u managed to get the Pattern Ply to show through. U bought some lovely brass fittings to go with and I have to say the 2 lights were a joy to see being made. Keep up this great work. I bet one of these big companies will steal this idea from u guys and they'll bring out an Edge banding styled on this if they haven't already. The Chevron is brilliant but then u can make the diamond shapes too which is the real bouns.
thank you for these ideas. I am thinking about using patterned plywood as the center slice in a bandsaw box!
you call it chatter= tearout – use some tape on work before you saw
Try blue tape on the bottom when u run them thru the bandsaw. However, pulling the tape off the 1/8" strips may break the pieces.
To me it's no better look for a lot of extra work over edge banding. But to each his own.
I have to admit even that strip you cut on the wrong side actually looks amazing. Has a lot of potential with both sides having a nice feel to them.
Id like to know/experiment about whether this chevron pattern could be turned into a dowel, maybe not with a lathe but a router technique instead?
I love these Rockler clamps. I'd recommend covering them with cling film, because once you get them gummed with glue they are very difficult to clean. The paint comes off very easily. Use cling film between the wood and the clamps is the answer
Watched your testing Video…
What if you were to use a better penetrating adhesive and Vaccum Seal your first layups?
As an amateur with woodworker, i typically feel overpowered with the entire arrangement https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxrYREG3-7f1Aqk9ams3ZESRNzGnfdUtyQ . Be that as it may, this arrangements drove me through with much clarity and effortlessness woodplans. Works i now work like a genius. That is great!
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Looking incredible, great vid, thanks
Where in the world do get plywood like that? What approx cost per sheet,
This guy made Plywood Damascus lol
I want that as flooring XD
It looks great, but if you do all this for a good looking piece of furniture, it might go into so much effort and time spent on beautifying the plywood that you could just have used solid wood anyways…
love this!
Try staining your woodglue as well. Might lead to some interesting results
What is the name of the clamps you've Got?
One last thought, on the bandsaw, try placing a thin plywood sheet on the top of the table and run the blade 1/2 with a lip on the bottom of the plywood it should stay in place now use that as your zero clearance table top. This could also work on a table saw in a pinch.
Bug youll need to 2 side tape it down so it cant move.
I kinda liked the border It created
12:40 try a jig to hold the strips evenly. put a strip of thin rubber on the contact surface when you sand so it doesnt slip.
would using a painter's tape on one side of the chevron before running it through the bandsaw along with the zero clearance help reduce chatter?
This is probably obvious to most of you, but I’m curious why you made your 1/8 inch cuts on the bandsaw instead of with your tablesaw? Is it because the pieces are so slim? Or because the blade has large teeth that would break up the delicate pieces? In the latter case, couldn’t you install a blade with more teeth that are smaller? I’m asking both for safety and because I find my bandsaw wildly inaccurate. It tends to follow grain patterns and drift. I use mine mostly to do relief cuts and to precut off the bulk of larger pieces. Thanks.
tedious
The 3D illusion on the pattern is quite strong!
nope, it is absolutely not worth spending all that time on a plywood item.
My fingers telling your fingers: push block.
Bro makes Damascus wood
You have no idea how many ideas this video gave me 🙏
Little more work but could you rabbit cut channel that the edges meet them in to the edges and you dont have to Viner them
About 11 minutes in, your strips make a Greek-key pattern alongside the diamond pattern! Nice!
That edge wouldn’t bother me a bit
Chevron cutting boards?
I have absolutely no wood working knowledge, but I have seen a wood hack to cut down or completely (supposedly) remove the "chatter" from the edge of wood and am wondering if it might work here… The video showed the woodworker putting tape on the wood top before cutting. In the video, it worked awesome for hindering a jagged edge for that particular project. ???
I used to make my own plywood from all kinds of wood veneer. The veneer is thin so you get a lot of layers and if you use dark and light wood it gives a great effect.
I have played with plywood a fair amount. Good trick for finishing is several rounds of shellac and sand back, shellac and sand back, you can get a very smooth finish on all that end gran fiber.
Very cool, but in all seriousness, how much does this add to the price?
this is phenomenal. what a genius idea. well done and thanks for sharing
that finished product is INCREDIBLE!
Great idea…. !!!
What if you also wrapped the blanks end over end with a layer of masking tape? Would prevent the bandsaw tearout and support the thin banding from breaking after cut.
next time try to make a miter on the edges. This would look so much better than it already does.
Excellent! Very cool! Thank you for sharing.
