Learn how to use print then cut in Cricut Design Space to make fun projects like t-shirts with an iron-on transfer. Get the free Ms. Maker brush lettering file (Design # 142) at

Print Then Cut seems to be one of the hardest to understand features of Cricut Design Space. So today I want to show you how easy Print Then Cut really is and demystify the whole process for you! There’s a lot of things we can make with the Print Then Cut feature, like stickers, wall decals, laptop and keyboard overlays, ornaments, and even temporary tattoos. But when I asked you all what you most wanted me to show you how to make with Print Then Cut on a Cricut, the overwhelming answer was T-SHIRTS!

MATERIALS FOR PRINT THEN CUT CRICUT TRANSFER T-SHIRTS (this list contains my affiliate links):

Printable iron-on transfer medium — I experimented with several brands, but the one I recommend is any of the iron-on transfer mediums FOR DARK FABRICS, such as or or

Inkjet printer (I use an HP Envy 7155) –

EasyPress, heat press, or iron –

Parchment paper or teflon sheet (there should be one in your package of transfers)

STEP 1: FIND OR MAKE A PRINT THEN CUT DESIGN

To get started, go to Cricut Design Space, start a new project, and click on Templates. Choose the shirt type you want to make, the size, and the color — this will help you visualize your shirt as you design it.

STEP 2. PRINT YOUR DESIGN FROM WITHIN CRICUT DESIGN SPACE

It’s important to note you must use an inkjet printer.

STEP 3: CUT YOUR DESIGN ON YOUR CRICUT

Once the transfer tape is printed, you’ll need to come back to Cricut Design Space and set it up for cutting. So click Browse All Materials and search on printable iron-on. Choose Printable Iron-On Light and click Done. I like to change my pressure to More. Now let’s cut it out.

Now, if you’re cutting on the fabric medium for dark colored fabrics, which is what I recommend, make sure your design is NOT mirrored but otherwise print it the same way. And when you go to cut it, select the Printable Iron-On Dark setting.

STEP 4: PREPARE YOUR IRON-ON PRINT DECAL FOR YOUR SHIRT

STEP 5: IRON ON YOUR PRINT DECAL

My recommendation is to only use the dark fabric transfers — even on white shirts. You’ll be a lot happier with the results. And you don’t have to worry about mirroring when you use those either.

Now it’s important that you follow the manufacturer’s directions for washing these iron-on transfer shirts. Check the instructions that come with your packaging — for example, you’ll probably want to wait at least 24 hours before washing, and then when you do wash it, turn it inside out and wash in cold water. It’s also important to have a full spin cycle so your T-shirt is not left soaking in water, as that will affect the decal. If you ever iron your T-shirt, make sure you turn it inside out — never iron on the side with the decal.

Now I mentioned you can use Print Then Cut for other things, like stickers using self-adhesive paper, like keyboard overlays and laptop decals using self-adhesive vinyl, and like faux tattoos using special transfer paper. If you’d like tutorials on any of these projects, leave me a comment below!

  1. I have my design ready to print then cut but when I go to print the Bluetooth pops up and will not connect to in my android, it says I need a app to do this. Not sure what to do to get printer to allow me to connect to it through my Bluetooth, it shows up but will not allow me to click it without the actual printer app,so confused, please help if you can. Thank you

  2. Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial. After several years of not being able to craft (I still have my Cricut Expression and Design Space was new then), I am excited to once again get into Cricut crafting. Wow, so much has changed with so many amazing options! I used to love to cut vinyl to use as stencils for glass etching. So, think the different vinyl projects would be my first choice. Thanks for all of your awesome tutorials, handbooks, etc.

  3. I tried and tried to sign up on your website it would not let me it saying missing surl when I put in cc information and finish it takes to to a game website when I go out of that it won’t confirm please help

  4. I made a few shirts using this tutorial and they looked great at first, however the decals got discolored and wrinkled during the first wash even after I let them set for 24 hours.. 🙁 could it be the quality of the transfer paper I'm using?

  5. I’ve watched this video and wanted to try making a print and cut image t-shirt for my wife’s upcoming birthday. She likes sugar skulls so I found one on Etsy that was quite colorful. I purchased the PNG file and downloaded it. It looked awesome after being printed out on my ink jet printer using some Siser Easy Color HTV material. However, during the cutting process my Maker 3 was cutting out all of the internal intricut design elements and not around the outside border as I expected. I cancelled the cut and upon inspection it wasn’t even doing a very good job of making the cuts all the way through in many areas even though I followed the Siser instructions for cutting on a Cricut Maker. I looked at the file in design space thinking I needed to flatten it or something but there were no options to modify the file. Any thoughts on why the maker 3 wanted to cut out all of the design elements of the file? Thanks for your help.

  6. What was the paper over the image when heat pressing? Also when I did a print and cut, my issue was the image color was dusting off. Like the ink color was dusting off when I was weeding and pulling my image to put on the shirt. I was using Avery iron on printable. Could this be a printer issue or a paper issue?

  7. Firstly, thank you! You are such a wonderful teacher. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into making your videos bc you thoroughly explain everything and go slowly, which help new makers. I do have a question as to how to know when to use “mirror image” when there’s text involved? You used it on the white shirt and not the black. Just wondering why? Thanks again! ❤❤

  8. Note: I fought and fought with my printer because i kept putting the mirror option on (as instructed). Although the computer would show the image reversed, it would print out forward. However, I finally discovered that using the transfer paper setting when printing AUTOMATICALLY reversed the image! Please let your followers know that this might happen and that it would be a good idea to pre print their project to make sure that it is actually reversed so they don't waste half of their HTV like I did.

  9. Hi, your videos have taught me everything I know about crafting with my explorer 3! Love how you explain everything in a way I can understand. CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON HOW TO USE AND DOWNLOAD FROM DESIGN BUNDLES! Thank you! ❤

  10. Finally attempted this today after watching the video multiple times. Despite flattening the image, my Maker still wanted to cut out each individual piece within the design instead of just the outline. (Like if yours cut out all the little craft tools instead of the outside of the wreath.)

I also tried unite and weld and was unsuccessful. What am I missing?

  11. So there is no way to just print onto the vinyl "iron-on" material made for circuit. I need to buy iron-on transfers? I purchased the "four oh five basics" brand of white vinyl but am now realizing after this video I need to return it and get basic t-shirt iron on packages?
