One of the reasons many people buy a Cricut is to be able to make T-shirts! And it’s easy to see why — the Cricut is perfect for T-shirt making, as it cuts out iron-in vinyl design like a champ. My Print Then Cut Iron on Transfer T-Shirt tutorial is a big hit, but print then cut can be a little challenging for beginners. So I want to dial it back a bit and do a very easy tutorial on how to make a T shirt with a Cricut for you!

For this project, we’ll be working with iron on vinyl, also known as heat transfer vinyl, or HTV. Iron on vinyl is a special type of vinyl that has a heat sensitive adhesive that will stick to fabric and other surfaces when pressed down with a heat source like an iron or an EasyPress. I will show you how to use BOTH in this video.

Now the cool thing about the Cricut is that you can cut out a design or name from iron-on vinyl of various colors, patterns, and textures to create a uniquely personalized design. And if you do it right, your shirt can be machine washed up to 50 times before you start to have issues. I will show you the RIGHT way to do it in this video so you get great results the first time!

Because the thing is, there’s a bunch of things that can go wrong the first time you make a shirt. You need to remember to mirror, or FLIP, the design, put the vinyl on your cutting mat with the right side up, weed the right part of the design, preheat your shirt first, set your temperature right, press long enough, and remove the carrier sheet at the right time. The good news is I’ll be right here with you while you make your iron on vinyl T-shirt to make sure you do it right!

  1. Jennifer, thank you so much for all the wonderful videos. I am fairly new at all things Cricut but I am inspired by you and want to make some t shirts following your tutorials. What do you recommend, teflon sheets, or butcher paper to use with the heat press. Thanks.

  2. Okay…I'm a beginner. I wish you had just followed the steps om creating the template that is simply in Cricut Design instead of leading us to your design! It's totally confusing enough without having to learn extra things which at this point in my learning process, I'm no where Near Ready to learn. Just needing Simple! You don't think it's hard to go elsewhere for a template but a lot of us do…Just looking for Simple. When we learn That, Then we can go the extra mile to Your site. I'm so frustrated I feel like packing my Maker3 back up and selling it. Does everyone have an agenda? I'm 72, not 27…but I want to learn. Is there a site for Seniors?? I was a practicing LVN so I'm not "slow"…but this is considered New Territory!

  3. Just finding this video and its so helpful! I have a question though. I noticed that in the video at 22:22 the heat settings mention to press for 30s at 315, lift press, remove the liner, and then flip over and press for 15s. But when you did it, you pressed for 30s at 315, lifted the press, didn't remove the liner, and flipped it over, pressed for another 15 and then removed the liner. So does either way work fine in terms of when to remove the liner? I haven't done a shirt yet but do not want to mess it up.

  4. I have my own design that I want to print onto the vinyl. Do I print the design on the matte side? And then I tried to put it in the cricut but the needle didn't seem to cut it when it went through the process 😬

  5. thank you !! this video helped me immensley. i even properly understood the purpose of contouring.!! can this be done with the cricut mini press? and also i am still a little lost as to why you had to use parchment with the house hold iron?

  6. Very informative, I have the Cricut vinyl that uses transfer tape, which video do I view to see how to use that? Thank you for this tutorial, much easier, very informative. Thank you.

  7. Hi Jennifer, I am trying to print a t-shirt for my granddaughters birthday party with the character ‘Inky’ from Mario. I have uploaded the image from Google into my DS successfully but even after I add an offset and flatten when it comes to print it is cutting eyes and internal pieces out instead of just the outline which is all I want. What am I doing wrong? I’m new to Cricut and feel I have bitten off more than I can chew!!!

  8. I recently got my cricut. Im trying to practice iron on cutting. I the placed my Iron On Vinyl on the grip, and selected Everyday Iron On, with More Pressure, but the cut did not go through😢. It works only if i select "Cardstock intricrate cut" option with More pressure. Im not sure what is the problem. Any help please?
