Trace the life cycle of a classic white t-shirt to find out how they’re made and what is their ultimate environmental impact.

Consider the classic white t-shirt. Annually, we sell and buy 2 billion t-shirts globally, making it one of the most common garments in the world. But how and where is the average t-shirt made, and what’s its environmental impact? Angel Chang traces the life cycle of a t-shirt.

  1. Спасибо. Очень полезное видео. Хорошо, что эту тему все чаще обсуждают. Надеюсь, люди станут меньше потреблять. Слишком много предложений, слишком много моды. Это только приносит проблемы.

  2. Don't talk about young people and inheritance. Old people inherited a worse , more careless world than you can imagine. The world is better today than it was in the 1950s, and most of those old people are dead and gone now.. Young people back in the 1970s did a lot to study ecology and how to improve our environment. Those people are in their 80s and 90s now, btw. Now, more than ever, people use their conscience about what they use and consume. It takes everyone, young and old to make the world a better place, and shaming old people doesn't help anyone. My grandma used to wash her aluminum foil, fold it up, store it in a drawer and reuse it. Do you young people do that??

  3. This is an eye-opening video for the community! Thanks for this! CLEO has its "Marketing for Good" platform that helps brands to have a sustainable and attainable adaptation of innovation to use in our everyday lives.

  4. This kind of video is interesting for the general public, to understand the steps of manufacturing a t-shirt, unfortunately they often contains false informations 😐

Concerning the world production, here are the figures generally indicated:
100 billion garments are sold each year in the world (2014) according to Greenpeace. Their production doubled between 2000 and 2014.

The video suggests that transport has a strong impact on GHG emissions, but this is not true, we could reduce to zero the number of km between the places of manufacture, distribution and consumption, that would not solve the problem of GHG emissions in fashion.
The most impactful phase is the finishing phase (dyeing, printing, finishing, etc.).

Similarly, it is stated that production emits "only" 10% of GHGs.
=> This is not the case if the product is used in France for example, as the energy mix there is very low-carbon.

"Fashion is the 2nd most polluting industry in the world" => same thing, a good big myth that has a life of its own.

The first real good solution to reduce the environmental impact of fashion: reduce the production of clothes…

    My recommendation:

And for those who are familiar with LCA, I can only recommend this report "The Great Greenwashing Machine"
You will see with a different eye all the information that circulates like :
"Organic cotton consumes less water than conventional cotton" or
"leather is polluting because of breeding" (everything is relative),
    etc.

  5. On thing i disagree with, is the depiction of emissions by trains. Trains are the most efficient transport method we have and the are (except in underdeveloped Countries and north America) fully electrical and where they aren't they aren't hard to convert.
