Montana & Denmark Farm Stories with Jens Toft
Today’s video is a wonderful interview in Denmark I had with Jens Toft in 2022 who came over to Montana when he was young to work on our Stephens family farm for a summer. I am very honored to have had the privilege to meet him and his family in Denmark. Our families have remained close over the years each visiting the other in Denmark and Montana. My Story…
Hello. My name is Kate Stephens, and I am an 18-year-old 4th-generation Montana farmer. My family has been farming wheat in north-central Montana since my great grandfather immigrated from Denmark in 1912 and homesteaded our land. My family has been teaching me about farming since I was two years old. I run one of the combines on the farm at harvest. I believe that it is important for everyone to know where their food comes from and the families who produce it. I love our farm, and I hope that my Farm to Fashion and Farm to Table products can help educate people about where their food comes from in a fun way. That is how Kate’s Ag – Farm to Fashion became a reality. I hope you love my products as much as I do because this is an extension of our farm and the grains we have been growing to feed other families for over one hundred years.

I'm sorry that you and your family lost such a good friend, Kate. It's so wonderful that you took the time to record your conversation with Mr. Toft. He seemed like an amazing person with an incredible story to tell. It's important to chronicle the lives of people of his generation. His reminiscences of Montana were incredible. Those dang Van Horn boys! It was still kind of the wild west in Montana back then. My dad's uncle homesteaded in Montana back in the early 1920's…up around Kalispell. He passed before I was born, but I visited his wife in Montana with my dad in the early 1970's…when I was not much younger than you are now! She was very old at the time, but I loved talking with her. Your conversation with Mr. Toft reminded me of that.

It's always sad when someone passes away. Fortunately you were able to spend some time with him and find out what things were like on your farm back in the day. And it does seem like he enjoyed his life and his travels. I was surprised with how much he saw of the U.S.
