The FA (Football Association) Cup was first held in 1871-72 and is England’s premier cup competition. The cup has always been won by English teams, apart from 1927 when the FA Cup was won by a Welsh team, Cardiff City.

The competition is a knock-out tournament with pairings for each round drawn at random, there are no seeded teams, so any team for any division can play against each other. This has led to many teams becoming ‘giant-killers’ by beating teams from higher divisions, which has always added excitement and prestige to the competition.

Welsh sides that play in English leagues are eligible to play in the FA Cup, although since the creation of the League of Wales in 1991, there are only six such clubs remaining, Cardiff City, Swansea, Wrexham, Merthyr, Newport and Colwyn Bay.

Cardiff had previously reached the Cup Final in 1925 when they lost 1-0 to Sheffield United, but history was made in the 1927 FA Cup Final, when Cardiff beat Arsenal to become the first, and so far only club. from outside England to win the FA Cup.

The game was watched by a crowd of 93,000 inside Wembley Stadium, including King George V and Britain’s two 20th Century war-time prime ministers, David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill.

The 1927 showpiece was the first cup final to be broadcast live on BBC Radio and was the final where the FA Cup anthem Abide With Me was sung, this has remained the traditional hymn for the FA Cup final, and is still sung prior to the final match today.

The only goal was scored by Hughie Ferguson in the 74th minute of the game, after a mistake by the Arsenal goalkeeper, Dan Lewis, who let the ball slip through his hands and into the net. Some controversy followed the game, as many believed that Lewis, who was Welsh, helped his countrymen to win the game; Lewis however blamed his brand new jersey for the error, saying the wool was too greasy for him to grip the ball properly. It is rumoured that superstitious Arsenal goalkeepers never wear a new shirt unless it has been washed first, even today.

Cardiff City had also adopted a black cat, named Trixie, as a lucky mascot, and they actually took the cat to Wembley Stadium for the game, on the condition that the owners were given tickets for the game.

The team were given a hero’s welcome when they returned to Cardiff, with thousands of fans lining the streets to cheer the team as they drove in an open-top car to meet the Mayor of the city on the steps of the City Hall.

The FA Cup has not returned to Wales since that day, although Cardiff reached the Cup Final again in 2008, but lost the final 1-0 to Portsmouth.
