  1. I have read so many reports of having to book entertainment, dining etc., that alone puts me off. Lower food choices, less staff, single turndown service, too? No thanks. I loved cruises for the pampering and freedom to choose what entertainment, when to eat aspects. Booking in advance doesn't suit me. True I also love visiting different ports day to day but, I think that unless it is going to a completely new destination to me, I will not bother any more. We have been doing UK/Ireland coach tours for a couple of years now and will probably continue.

Added to add: the continuing threat of covid effects is also a biggie. I cannot bear the thought of throwing away thousands of pounds for such a risk. Insurance won't be enough.

  2. I was on an HA cruise in October and the steward asked me if I wanted turn down service— it seemed to be my choice. I said no, it's nice to get the chocolate, but I would rather not have a stranger coming into my cabin, except for necessary cleaning.

  3. Here is the recipe for financial disaster: Raise prices, lower quality, cut back on quantity and eliminate services. Seems like the cruise lines are following this path. Cruise prices are up, gratuities are 10-15% higher, food quality has gone down, fewer choices on the menus with less rotation, cabin service had been cut by 50%, eliminating twice per day service. All of these cutbacks are making a cruise vacation less of a value, not to mention shore excursions are more costly. Not smart for the cruise lines to do, especially when retirees like us are facing increasing food and fuel costs. Older people make up a large majority of the cruise customer base.

  4. When the MBA's take over cruise lines (like they have the casino industry) they squeeze every penny of profit out of it that they can. It always results in a reduction of the things that attract business to begin with.

  5. Yep i am finished with princess, ships too big, ports unable to handle transport services. Port loading in sydney was dreadful. Food and dining service still excellent but the rest of it was not a great holiday. Red wine $72 a bottle, $20 on shore! See ya princess looking for smaller lines, without kids even if i have to pay more. I dont mind paying a little more if i get what i came for!

  6. People will start looking at alternatives like flying rather than cruising and once that happens and patronage starts to fall they’ll wake up to themselves but the damage will be done and it will take another year to get the customers back.. all business do this not just cruise lines and in most cases it end badly for businesses.

  7. The tipping regime on cruise ships is a real annoyance for this Brit. It seems excessive when compared to that in the average hotel. Cruise lines should, I think, raise fares, raise staff pay, and then quit bothering passengers for tips.
P.S. Sent from a good Austrian hotel. I'll leave 10e for the chambermaid.

  8. Does not really affect me now as I am now alone, so I can not afford to cruise as a single, As a couple I think it is despicable to reduce the service though not the price
They are doing away with all the really nice things you do not normally get at home You are now a commoner and not a Prince

  9. Since way back in the time when noroviruses were the worst plague being shared among cruise ship passengers I have wondered if the experience was a worth the risk and expense. Thank you for confirming the correctness of my decision to never get within a dock's length of one of those prison ships for masochists. I will do my cruising on land.

  10. I sympathise with the cruise lines as covid and their loss of revenue was not their fault, and I understand they have to watch their costings. However all I ask is that you don’t take away value for money. If I pay good money and get chuff all for it then I won’t be happy and my cruising days will certainly be over.
