How A Brick & Rock Battery Is Changing Energy Storage – Explained. The first 100 people to use code UNDECIDED at the link below will get 20% off of Incogni: Grid-scale lithium ion batteries are our current go-to chemical energy storage solution, but they present their own challenges in safety, sustainability, cost, and longevity. However, the competition is … heating up. New forms of thermal energy storage systems built using abundant, cheap materials are on the rise. One company is aiming to sidestep the complications that come with chemical batteries…with a brick battery. And another company’s weapon of choice is a crushed volcanic rock battery. Talk about going back to basics to store massive amounts of energy. But is simple really best?

Do you think storing heat is a smart move? The first 100 people to use code UNDECIDED at the link below will get 20% off of Incogni: https://incogni.com/undecided.

if your goal is to make and store heat, then it makes much more sense to use the heat of the sun directly instead of turning it into electricity (at much lower efficiency) and turning that into heat. just a thermodynamics heads-up!
USA wants its Robo police army live by 2035 ofcourse it is. Boston Dynamics isnt playing for fun.
One small correction….wind turbines are mostly made up of….wait for it….concrete! Their foundations are massive! By weight or by volume, there is far more concrete than metal. (And there's a lot of metal in the concrete…)
I love the idea of storing thermal energy with so many applications, and district heating seems like a fantastic way to increase efficiency! I hope the technology is ready to pick up the pace soon and that it benefits everyone we share this world with.
Oh, so now it’s bricks and rocks…..what was it last week, I forget, ham and eggs?
2:40 1: cheaper, but you can't use just any old rock, they'll want to use a processed material to remove impurities that would react and break down with time.
2/3. Very few things can handle high temperature cycling without degradation. The high temperatures will readily cause expansion which will create cracks, letting other contaminations to get in over time and further cause damage. I'd be surprised if they even got 5 years without needing a complete overhaul from first designs.
4. Not going down that rabbit hole except to say, less emissions…
I think you missed a perfect opportunity at 2:00 to throw in a "dirt cheap" pun.
Thanks for another great video! I love Thermal Energy Storage systems. It's always better when you have the laws of physics on your side – and it's far more efficient to make and store heat in a central location, then move it to where it's needed, than continually burning fuel every time you want heat.
Sounds like a Masonic conspiracy.
It's a crappy deal if you are pulling power off the grid to generate the heat. Using electricity to generate the steam for district heating is just barely viable in the US, and losing 5 – 10 % by stuffing one of these units in the mix would probably do it in. That said, maybe you'd see some benefit in a cogen setup.
6:02 serious question
Why the hell not just use Calories as a measure for heat, which is something that almost 100% of people understand on some level vs BTU which is something anyone whose not an engineer doesn't understand? They make the measurement the exact same way, so I mean, why not?
Storing heat like this could have so many small-mid scale uses. Imagine an airport being able to cheaply heat their runways and taxiways so ice/snow aren't issues anymore?
Im just wondering how many applications it has in the countries where heat is the easiest to find- Saharan Africa, Australia, equatorial countries
Sounds like a fantastic thing; for about a year or two. Silica isn't the solution to our energy crisis of any kind lol. Beach sand is basically bricks, beach sand heats up yupp; stores alot of energy……has a high energy decay rate too…..that's a bad thing lol. We have been using bricks inside wood stoves for centuries at least. They store alot because they give off alot. The chemical properties dont support any of this lol; the decay rate is massive. Not a solution to anything really, just another fad someone might start up for a quick buck to take hippies money from them.
Snake oil folks; "it'll cure all disease and ailment of any kind, even reverses the aging process! Step right up and get yours before they are all sold out!" Lol.
Not talking about the youtuber or whatever discount is being sold; I'm talking about bricks for storing energy lol its seriously a bad idea lol. Like wood microchips lol its a gimmick. There's no real science behind the claims.
competition is heating up 🤣🤣
nice everyone is getting charged up for a revolution!
I didn't see it mentioned, but it seems that Stirling engines may be a logical choice to produce electricity, when temperatures may be too low to drive turbines. Of course, there are also Thermovoltaics, so we shall see what turns out to be most optimum.
Lol 😅 thermal energy storage industry is starting to heat up and it uses dirt cheap raw materials made of dirt 😂😂 funny script.
great.. now I want poptarts.
kinda funny you talks about the US and then shows the steel factory in IJmuiden in the Netherlands 😛
We already have clean, safe, affordable energy; it's called nuclear.
