Is Debian for you? Maybe!

In today’s Sidtastic episode of Veronica Explains, I dive into Debian, the 30-year-old ancestor of Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Pop!_OS, and so many other Linux distros. We’ll also talk about why this Linux distribution so well loved after so long, and who could benefit from using it. Maybe even… you?

  1. Addendum comment!

    1. I didn't talk about Debian Testing in this video. That was deliberate, based on where we are in the release cycle at time of filming. I wanted to keep the video around 10 minutes and Testing is really its own thing.
    2. Debian is one of the oldest distros, but there's certainly others worth mentioning- Slackware comes to mind. Debian's different though in that it's extremely popular in production work to this day, probably moreso than any other of the "classics".
    3. You're right, I didn't mention [insert Debian-based distro here]. I wasn't talking about the "we're based on Debian" distros, I was talking about classic Debian. That was a design choice (for brevity mostly).
    4. As always, if I covered everything in every detail you'd be here for decades. 😛

Lastly, if you want to support the channel, one of the easiest ways is to buy the shirt I'm wearing in the video! vkc.sh/merch. Thanks all!

  2. If you want to update your pc every time you boot then go use arch, I don't have that much time. Used arch for 6 month. It's boring yesterday soft working today it's broke. Using Debian for a decade. So yeah I am okay with Nvidia AMD or Intel.

  3. Yeah I ran Sid in high school many years ago, and I learned SO MUCH about recovering linux systems. Like the time libc6 broke and I had to boot from FLOPPIES to install the right package. Heheheheh

  4. according to the community, debian is NOT FOR YOU. ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT NON-FREE PACKAGES. 😂 seriously though they need to do something about how impossible it is to get a specific install image for debian. also thanks to distrobox i use whatever distro of linux i need right here on top of my nobara install

  5. I've used Debian for casual use since 1997(I first started with Slackware in 1996) and I'm really used to it. I find it easy to use from the cli plus with Raspberry Pi OS using as the base it's easier to keep my machines updated.
Professional though I'm a RHEL admin and even though I didn't like it at first I really have grown to like yum/dnf over apt. Either way package managers are a million times easier to use than the 1.2.x, 1.3.x, and 2.0.x kernel based distos of the time. I can't say I miss compiling and installing a new kernel every few days after downloading the source over a modem for hours then waiting for a 486 or early Pentium to compile it.

  6. I use Debian XFCE for my headless NAS running OpenMediaVault. SSH in & update👍. Anything that's appliance based (setup & forget) is always Debian. I'm a KDE guy. Currently using Nobara(Fadora) for Gaming Laptop. MX Linux for my main PC.

  7. Debian seems to be less "behind" on the packages for stable these days, at least where desktop apps like FlightGear or Ardour are concerned. I run a CentOS 6 machine dedicated to radio automation, but my general use computers all feature Debian 11 at this time. Ubuntu has it's uses, but it's not for me…

  8. Thank you for the Debian Video Veronica, Been using Debian for awhile now but used to distro hop a lot but prefer the rock solidness of Debian I can manage with the older software as shiny (Latest) isn't always better.
Thanks again and please take care, already left a huge👍.

  9. Wow. I just realized Debian was 13 when I first used it – this point is more far in time now than its creation when I installed it. It was my first distro until I switched to Ubuntu, my friend installed it as dual boot with WinXP.
